SKILLFULL BUILDERS: Ready to Face Life's Challenges

Graduation is one of the most important milestone in one’s life. It marks both an end and a beginning to a journey. SKILLS concluded its 1st Commencement Exercises with a theme: “K to 12 Learners Ready to Face Life’s Challenges” held on April 12, 2018 at CAP Building, Jones Avenue, Cebu City. The first batch of SHS TVL graduates were composed of 125 students in Home Economics and Industrial Arts.

One of the messages delivered by Dr. Bianito Dagatan, DepEd Schools Superintendent Cebu City Division, he underscored that the K to 12 graduates are now ready to explore the many opportunities outside of school: Handa sa Kolehiyo; Handa sa Trabaho; Handa sa Negosyo and soon to be Handa sa Pamilya. But he discourages the latter to give more priority in honing their skills, abilities and values in order to be ready in the face of competition. Dr. Dagatan likewise stressed the importance of setting specific goals and shared a simple technique to be successful in the world of work.
The keynote speaker of this momentous event was no less than the Regional Director of the Department of Education of Region 7, Dr. Juliet A. Jeruta. In her speech, Dr. Jeruata inspired the graduates to keep their dreams burning in their hearts, to never stop learning and thrive to achieve those aspirations in spite of trials and tribulations.

Perseverance, pursuit of excellence, overcoming fears and prayer were the powerful words that PSEFI-SKILLS President had imparted to the graduating students as she delivered her inspirational message.  “We are all dreamers. Some of you would dream to go to college, others dream to get employed immediately, others dream to have their own business, own a house, work abroad… a million dreams that keep us awake each night. But dreams will only remain as dreams if we do not take the first step. The President reminded the students that destiny is in their own hands, they should own their future because there is no destination beyond reach of one who walks with God.”

One of the highlights of the event was the presentation of students comprising almost half of the graduates who were Hired on the Spot during the 1st SHS TVL Jobs Fair to commence employment immediately after they complete the requirement of the company. These companies include: Primary Structures Corporation, Maayo Hotel, Cebu Mitsumi, Central Lumber Corporations, Circa 1900 , Excellerate, Pages Groups, Primepower Manpower Services, Nua Thai Foot and Body Massage Spa, SM, Sunpride and Cebu Grand Hotel. The President shared that PSEFI-SKILLS is the: 1st to empower women in the construction industry, 1st industry-driven tech voc institution, 1st to pilot early implementation of  senior high 3 years ago, 1st to introduce the scouting program in Senior high, provide a  multiple NC, a multi-skilled graduate with 3-4 NCs ( bundled); 1st to have the most number of Senior High graduates hired during the Jobs Fair  with graduates being offered a job offer during graduation; and, 1st in the Philippines to take the industry assessment ACAS: accreditation, certification, assessment system of Cebu Chamber of Commerce. Mrs. Liu concluded by expressing her aspiration for students to make good use of the opportunities provided by SKILLS and to look after those who were not given the same opportunity.

As a catalyst for change, Cyril Ann Garcia, who graduated with high honor gave her valedictory address to her fellow graduates and quote “… the future is yours to create. It is yours to design and to embrace. Some dreams take time but dream will find its way when your heart is set to achieve it. Be always ready whatever life throws at you. Just always remember to always believe in yourself that you can.

This meaningful activity of SKILLS will always leave a mark in each person present during the ceremony. Indeed, it was successful and unforgettable event that stamps in the history of the institution.
