May 11, 2016, Cebu City --- Quest, one of PSEFI-SKILLS' hotel partners, organized a one-day Basic Sign Language Class for their hotel employees and staff held at the Armstrong Hall, 6th floor of Quest Hotel and Conference Center. Conducting the training was Bro. Dennis Libarnes of the Gualandi Mission for the Deaf. Presently, Quest has six (6) deaf-mute Housekeeping NC II graduates who were all scholars of the PSEFI-SKILLS, Gualandi-LINK Center for the Deaf partnership.
There were 2 sessions of the basic sign language class, morning and afternoon. We were very fortunate to have been given 3 slots per session for free. Attending the morning session were Mayline Lipnica (Documentation), Michelle Salon (Marketing) and Tito Daiz, Jr. (Human Resources), while the afternoon was attended by Javic Cabalda (Technical Training), Maricel Madamba (Blue Desk) and Annaliza Padayao (Senior High School).

The first part of the class consisted of memorizing the sign
language alphabet. Afterwards, the participants had to introduce themselves by spelling out their names using signs. It was interesting to communicate without making any noise! The basic signs taught were common greetings, describing emotions, giving instructions and directions, asking questions, knowing how to count, and building basic vocabulary in signs: colors, descriptive words about people, places, the weather, etc. According to Bro. Dennis, 3 hours isn't really enough to learn sign language well. What the participants need to know is to practice regularly by really 'talking' to a deaf-mute student or co-worker.

This activity would not have been possible without the determination of Quest's Training Manager, Ms. Abigail S. Yenko. She arranged for this activity as a form of upgrading skills training for their staff who all coincide working with Deaf trainees and graduates in the following departments: Housekeeping, Food and Beverage, Front Desk, Laundry and Linen, and clerical offices such as Finance/Accounting, Admin and HR. We are also very grateful to Gualandi Mission for the Deaf, through Bro. Dennis, who conducted this training free-of-charge!
We hope there will be more basic sign language classes in the future in order to equip us to be conversant in communicating with our deaf-mute students and work colleagues.
