AFOS and CCCI Organize Communication Enhancements and Planning Workshop for Partners and Stakeholders
Participants of the AFOS-organized seminar on Advocacy, Communication Planning and Media Relations |
February 16, 2017, Thursday --- AFOS Foundation for Entrepreneurial Development Cooperation, in coordination with the Cebu Chamber of Commerce, Inc. organized a one-day seminar seeking to improve the ways with which we communicate and share the good news in our respective organizations.
Dubbed as, "Communication Enhancements and Planning Workshop," held yesterday at Montebello Villa Hotel in Banilad, Cebu City, the event was attended by over 20 partners and stakeholders from the education/academe, business/private and public/government sectors, all affiliated with AFOS Foundation, Inc., a German foundation founded by the members of the Federation of Catholic Entrepreneurs. This seminar aims to give its partners relevant inputs on how to communicate what they do effectively, using all forms of media at their disposal. Promoting the Senior High School/K to 12 Program Implementation is the main issue in question in this whole day seminar.
Dr. Mine Newman during her lecture on Advocacy |
The main speaker and facilitator of this activity was Dr. Minerva "Mine" BC Newman, the former regional director of the Philippine Information Agency (PIA) in Region VII. She was introduced by her colleague, Ms. Ferliza C. Contratista, currently working as the Information Development Officer of PIA-Cebu.
Attending the seminar were representatives from the Cebu Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the Department of Education (DepEd), Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA), the School of Knowledge for Industrial Labor, Leadership and Service (SKILLS), Banilad Center for Professional Development (BCPD) and other academic institutions who are partners of AFOS' Senior High School/K to 12 Program implementation.
During one of the workshops: The Slam Book |
Dr. Newman conducted four (4) workshops which allowed the participants time to get to know one another, talk about particular issues concerning their organizations, discuss solutions to identified issues in the field of education and training, and come up with a working communication plan to combat possible obstacles in furthering the specific advocacies which each organization espouses.
A lecture on the Communication Process (Sender-Message-Channel-Receiver-Feedback) was presented thoroughly by Dr. Newman, zeroing-in on the main goal of any given communication: and this is to achieve common understanding. The participants learned that 'good communication' involves a give-and-take relationship between talking and listening.
Representatives of AFOS' partners and stakeholders |
The second lecture on Advocacy-Communicating Issues to Various Publics, highlighted a beautiful working definition of Advocacy: the organization of information into an argument that will be used to persuade various audiences or publics towards some attitudes or predisposition to action. Persuasion has a big role in it in order to effect change in behavior. Dr. Newman talked about the Tools and Strategies organizations must use in strengthening their public relations presence in society. These include the so-called Big Bang, Big Visit, Fun Run, Little Bang, Letter, Quiet Meeting and Technical Journals. The conclusion the group came to is to study the target market (person or institution) to be persuaded or convinced to promote and sustain the organization's programs. It was also stressed that an organization's Specific Message has to be clear and catchy, much like a slogan that will have a good name recall. In the afternoon, Dr. Newman taught the participants how to come up with a Communication Plan which could be a task assigned to personnel involved in a Communication Advocacy Unit, something which is ideal to be put up in organizations.
Ms. Fely Contratista talks about how to storify our advocacies |
Ms. Ferliza C. Contratista of PIA-Cebu, a UP Cebu Mass Communication-Journalism graduate, gave a lecture on How to Storify Advocacies and How to Build Relationships with the Media. She gave interesting and amusing true-to-life stories culled from her rich experience as a media practitioner. She shared tips and techniques on how to write press releases for both print and broadcast media and also encouraged participants to explore all sorts of social media such as Facebook (Mini-Blog), Blogspots, Twitter, etc. in order to make their respective organizations' presence felt in the digital world.
Mr. Norbert Weiss of AFOS gave the Welcome Remarks in yesterday's seminar. Mr. Paolo Briones of AFOS-Tourism Sector Project Manager emceed the event.
It is hoped that after this seminar-workshop, the various projects of each stakeholder present in the activity would be able to share their stories in a wide range of media, with the end of inspiring, persuading, and getting people to decide to move and act towards the development of the society where they belong.
